Background of the Study

Traditional crafts in Eket have long embodied the artistic heritage and cultural identity of the community. These crafts, including weaving, pottery, and carving, are not only economic activities but also carriers of cultural knowledge passed down through generations (Mbanefo, 2023). Recently, however, there has been a noticeable decline in youth engagement in these artisanal practices due to urban migration, modern career aspirations, and the influence of technology (Edet, 2024). This disengagement threatens the survival of traditional craft techniques and the cultural legacy they represent. Some argue that integrating modern technology and education with traditional craft practices may revitalize interest among the youth (Nsikak, 2025). This study examines the current state of youth participation in traditional crafts, analyzing factors that deter or encourage involvement and exploring possible interventions to reinvigorate these practices (Udo, 2023). It aims to provide insights into how cultural heritage can be preserved while also promoting economic empowerment and social cohesion within the community.

Statement of the Problem

Youth engagement in traditional crafts in Eket is waning, with many young people turning to modern career paths rather than continuing ancestral craft traditions (Edet, 2023). This decline jeopardizes the preservation of indigenous artistic techniques and cultural identity. The study seeks to identify the factors responsible for the reduced interest in traditional crafts among the youth and to propose actionable strategies to reinvigorate their participation in these culturally significant practices (Mbanefo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the current level of youth involvement in traditional crafts.

2. To identify factors influencing youth disengagement.

3. To propose strategies for revitalizing traditional craft practices.

Research Questions:

1. What is the current state of youth engagement in traditional crafts in Eket?

2. What factors discourage young people from pursuing these crafts?

3. What strategies can enhance youth participation in traditional crafts?

Research Hypotheses:

1. H1: Modern career aspirations negatively impact youth engagement in traditional crafts.

2. H2: Educational interventions can increase interest in traditional crafts.

3. H3: Community-led initiatives positively influence youth participation.

Significance of the Study

The study is significant as it offers critical insights into preserving indigenous craft traditions through enhanced youth engagement. Its findings will benefit cultural policymakers and community leaders in developing sustainable strategies to empower the youth while safeguarding cultural heritage (Nsikak, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing youth engagement in traditional crafts in Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, focusing solely on local artisanal practices.

Definitions of Terms:

• Traditional Crafts: Indigenous artistic and manual skills passed down through generations.

• Youth Engagement: The active participation of young people in cultural and economic activities.

• Cultural Preservation: Efforts aimed at maintaining and safeguarding cultural heritage.
